5 Donut Capital

Back in Minnesota we joke that there’s a McDonald’s on every corner. I suppose there are many cities that could say that. As I’ve explored Rhode Island I think I’ve actually seen only two McDonalds (or I’ve learned to ignore them. But I will say that Wendy’s is pretty common here.) But on “every corner” there’s a Dunkin’ Donuts store! Donuts are big here, nurses talk about them like they’re a glorious treasure, so of course I had to check it out for myself.

(When I do my rounding on the units, I’ll ask – is there anything you guys need or anything I can help with? The two most common responses are “DONUTS!” and “Steak!” Which is funny coming from the Ocean State. They must be sick of seafood, if that’s even a thing.)

This one was near where I lived in East Providence. Not all stores are this fancy; many are simple donut shops.
Honey Dew is another chain out here in New England. They also have many stores around, but not as common as Dunkin. A co-worker’s husband owns this location.
This is PVDonuts. PVD is Providence’s airport code and abbreviation used for many references to the city. This is the only location, but the donuts are so popular, you’d think they’re everywhere. They are known for specialty, gourmet donuts with delicious integrations of flavors that are changed monthly to keep you coming back for more!
Believe it or not, I actually only ate one of these. The rest went to donut heaven.

In the picture above:

The donuts in the box are from PVDonuts. They were absolutely humongous. One was a maple-frosted long john, the other a “milk and cookies” donut with nuts.

The donuts in the center are from Honey Dew. One was a “honey glazed” chocolate cake donut and the other a basic chocolate frosted with chocolate sprinkles.

On the right are donuts from Dunkin Donuts. My favorite, a custard-filled donut, and a chocolate frosted donut with sprinkles. (Ok, so donuts bring out the kid in me! No shame here, lol!)

I didn’t need to eat them all to tell you that they’re all fantastic. They smelled wonderfully sweet and were soft and welcoming. I regretted not trying the milk and cookies donut from PVDonuts but I just didn’t have an appetite for sweets that weekend. By the time I wanted a donut, they were dried out so I didn’t risk being disappointed. Maybe someday I’ll get more donuts and try some other outlier shops and do a taste comparison. I’ll bet some nurses here would join me!
