1 The Reverse Driver’s Tan

Thoughts while driving

When driving to anywhere in the U.S. from Minnesota, you basically go east, south, or west. Or some combination, like east, then southeast then south, then east again. If I had gone west, you wouldn’t be reading this. I left Minnesota for Rhode Island for a temporary assignment as a Travel Nursing House Supervisor. Yes, it’s a thing. After many conversations with my husband, and about two months of planning, I landed a position in RI. I believe the Ocean State was on my list of “nevers”, and I should know better than to keep saying “never”, but that is a conversation for another time.

Sitting in a vehicle all day is difficult while missing the bright, sunny day. Going south with the sun starting to set placed the star to my right. This was good because at least I wasn’t driving into it. I put the passenger window down to get a good breeze and soak up some Vitamin D while I sat and drove. As I flew down I94, roadside tree shadows were stretched across the highway making a sunburst strobe light across my face. In areas with no trees, I was able to soak up the sun. I imagined being sunburned this way, I guess it’s possible, on my face and arm. Someone would say, “how did you get burned only on the right side of your face and arm?” And I would reply, “Oh I was driving all day.” Oh, wait…what? Yeah, it’s a reverse driver’s tan!
